CILT Mobility & Supply Chain / SETU Supply Chain Knowledge Day

CILT Mobility & Supply Chain Skillnet in conjunction with South East Technological University (SETU) held the first Supply Chain Knowledge Day in the SETU Carlow Campus on Saturday April 1st last. This was the final event in what was a highly successful first ever Logistics Week for Ireland supported by the Department of Transport and the Logistics and Supply Chain Skills Group.

The purpose of this day was to highlight the continous collaboration between The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport Ireland and SETU and to allow the students and lecturers of courses like the Higher Certificate in Sustainable Supply Chains, Digitalisation and Logistics to come together and meet in person for the first time.

Students of Higher Certificate Level straight up to Masters level in Supply Chain Management were in attendance alongside members of the Institute and distinguished guest speakers such as Professor Veronica Campbell, President of SETU, CILT President Brendan Keating and some fantastic speakers from industry. Head of Logistics at Tírlan, Eoghan O’Regan, gave an insightful presentation into the global reach of Tírlan and inspired students to think ‘beyond milk’ into the vast diversification of products involved in Tírlan’s supply chain.

Chairperson of the Western Section of CILT and Operations Manager of PPG in Limerick Marlo Kearney gave an in depth presentation into the realities of start up operational planning and gave students a glimpse of what they have to look forward to in their careers. We were joined also by Dr. Tony McVeigh who spoke to inventory control and uncertainty, Pat Barrett and Jamie Edwards from the Environmental Protection Agency who discussed Water Resource Management and Liam Cassidy of Altix Consultin who showcased Lean Transformations and spoke about his vast experience in the industy with turning around failing companies.

 

 

Edmond Connolly of South East Regional Skills Forum’s presentation was all about Trends and Disruptions in Logistics and what skills graduates will need to possess in order to succeed today.

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between representatives of SETU, CILT and CILT Mobility & Supply Chain Skillnet to signify the ongoing collaboration in developing and delivering programs to support the ongoing professionalisation and upskilling of Supply Chain, Logistics and Transport sectors.

 

 

This event rounded off a successful Logistics Week, during which the ‘Triple Connection’ supply chain simulation game competition was played out by several teams from UCD Smurfit and SETU. SETU students came a close second in this game recieving signed copies of Professor Martin Christopher’s book Logistics and Supply Chain Management with UCD Smurfit in first place winning the CILT Mobility & Supply Chain Skillnet trophy and some generous prize vouchers.

 

 

The students and graduates were also in the position to meet with various exhibitors from companies such as LIDL, Quality Freight and Berkley Group to discuss recruitment opportunities within the logistics and supply chain sector.
